This year's flood is 'uncharted territory'

There's a massive new effort underway in the Red River Valley. A new flood prediction has the Red River in Fargo reaching a record 41-foot crest by early Saturday. That's a foot higher than the community had been planning for.

Low-lying Oakport Township on the north side of Moorhead is in a desperate fight to try to save 500 of its 550 homes.
    Township Chairman Greg Anderson says he knows of a few homes that have already flooded. About 50 homes in the township are thought to be safe.
    Dennis WalakerAnderson says they need more volunteers, but that by the end of the day the rising water will leave few areas where it's possible to sandbag.   ...

Wat in Christchurch overblijft, is een grijze drab

Reddingswerkers halen nog steeds lichamen onder het puin vandaan in het Nieuw-Zeelandse Christchurch. De overlevenden bezinnen zich op hun toekomst. Door de aardbeving staan ineens complete wijken op drijfzand.

Het is zaterdagmiddag en op Moorhouse Avenue, de slagader van Christchurch, kun je een kanon afschieten zonder iemand te raken. Vier dagen na de aardbeving die een groot deel van de Nieuw-Zeelandse stad verwoestte en vermoedelijk ruim tweehonderd doden veroorzaakte, lijken sommige wijken uitgestorven.   ...
    In het asfalt ontstaan daardoor spontaan grote gaten. Grijs slib is op de vreemdste plaatsen tevoorschijn gekomen. Nu de zon schijnt en de modder zienderogen opdroogt, hangen de straten vol stof. Overal hebben zich vrijwilligers gemeld - meest studenten, uit het hele land afkomstig - om de drab uit tuintjes en van opritten te verwijderen en naar de straat te transporteren.    ...
